The garden has over 800 varieties of registered hybrid daylilies in every color and form available. The challenge has been to get them enough sunlight to bloom, and to protect them from the deer, who know full well that daylily blossoms are indeed edible. Actually, they must be indescribably delicious. The deer have a habit of waiting until just before bloom to neatly pick off the swollen buds.
I’ve tried every deterrent imaginable. What I’ve found is that everything works…for awhile, and sometimes for quite awhile. But eventually, the deer return, seemingly more destructive than ever. I’ve now got my daylilies inside a fenced in area 7 1/2 feet high. That has effectively “ended” the daylily deer problem. I say “ended” because in the three years since the fence was installed, there have been 2 breeches when I forgot to close the fence door securely. And I paid the price for the negligence…
Anyway, here are some of my babies.
